How to record your Mac screen with your face and voice.

3 ways, from the most basic to the fastest to share.

Updated November 2, 2026

To record your Mac screen press ⌘ ⇧ 5 and choose “Record Entire Screen” or “Record Selected Portion”. You get a .mov file on the Desktop.

To record your screen and your face together and send a link, use an app like Hilo: press ⌘ ⇧ H, record, and when you stop the link is already copied.

⌘⇧5
Built into macOS

1. With ⌘⇧5 (built into macOS)

  1. Press ⌘ ⇧ 5.
  2. Choose to record the entire screen or a portion.
  3. Under Options, pick your microphone.
  4. Click Record. To stop, use the button in the menu bar.

Good for: a quick recording for yourself. Missing: your camera on top and a way to share without sending a file.

Built into macOS

2. With QuickTime Player

Open QuickTime Player › File › New Screen Recording. To show your face, first open File › New Movie Recording, keep that window on top and record the screen.

Good for: getting by without installing anything. Missing: the camera window can't be made round and doesn't hide itself, and the video is still a file.

⌘⇧H
Screen, face and link

3. With Hilo (screen, face and link)

  1. Download Hilo for free and install it.
  2. Press ⌘ ⇧ H. Pick screen or window, camera and mic.
  3. Record. Your camera shows in a bubble you move anywhere.
  4. Stop with the same shortcut. The link is already on your clipboard.

Hilo zooms where you click and smooths the cursor, with no editing. You see who opened it and how far they watched.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my Mac screen with audio?
With ⌘ ⇧ 5 choose “Record” and, under Options, your microphone. With Hilo, press ⌘ ⇧ H, pick the mic and record.
How do I record my screen and my face at the same time on a Mac?
macOS does not do it in one step. With Hilo, your camera shows in a round or square bubble you move anywhere, and the video keeps it where you left it.
How do I share a recording without sending a heavy file?
With Hilo there is no file: when you stop, the link is already copied. Whoever gets it opens it in the browser, with no account.
Where are Mac screen recordings saved?
The ones from ⌘ ⇧ 5, on the Desktop by default. Hilo's, in its library, on your Mac and in your account.
How long can a recording be?
On your Mac, as long as you want. To share with a link, up to 5 minutes on the Free plan and unlimited on Pro.
Can I use my iPhone camera?
Yes. Hilo can use your iPhone camera as the bubble camera.

That meeting could’ve been a video.
